At the beginning of 2020, 66 long-term refugee camps¹ existed along the East African Rift.² Some, such as Nakivale in Southwest Uganda, were established as early as 1958. Around two million refugees lived in these camps in 2020, with roughly half a million of them being younger than six years old.³ Over the years, millions of children have been born and have grown up in these camps. Yet, it is unknown how their surrounding built environments affect their learning and development.
